The city of Copenhagen conducted an experiment to detect the flow of bicycle traffic along some important corridors in the city. The study consisted of tagging approximately 300 randomised bicycles with passive RFID tags that leave a trace every time it passed near one of the 5 RFID antennas (receivers). The study was designed to run for 6 months and aggregated the anonymous data (i.e. No personal data was collected). The data was sampled every one hour over the entire period of study.

Through our visualisation, we were able to detect patterns, seasonal variations and waiting times at intersections in order to infer the factual basis for designing a green wave i.e. a smooth flow of traffic minimizing stoppage for red lights, thus encouraging bicycling and a greener city.
